Wolseley Hub

Wolseley Hub

The Wolseley Hub is as a subsidiary resource to our Jan Cutting Healthy Living Centre and is managed by our Community and Wellbeing Manager Nicki Chinnock. Through our community based and Primary Care services we currently work with an active network of over 200 support organisations and groups across Plymouth. We can connect people to support services and make sure that anyone affected gets the help they need – mental health support, health and wellbeing, support for their families, as well as specialist trauma-related support.

In August 2021 we were all left in shock and deeply distressed by the tragic Keyham incident. Through 2023 and 2024 this community Hub has continued to play a pivotal role in supporting our communities and has established activities and services which include dedicated support groups. For example, we are a founding partner of the Keyham Trauma Informed Network which continues to meet at the hub every month. We secured funding through POP to continue to deliver these sessions to local community representatives. We now have 12 regular attendees. This enables the network to support the local community through a Trauma Informed lens.

We also supported with the Keyham bomb incident where we became an Evacuation Point in the immediate aftermath of the discovery before The Beacon and The Life Centre were set up. We supported 5 different community members and their families who had to leave their properties – with food, information and a place of safety whilst the full plan was executed. We continued to support the operation over the next six days by offering Wolseley Community Hub as a ‘comfort station’ to D&C Police and national teams of Police Officers as they were drafted in from further afield. We were approached by PCC to provide further community-based support to those directly affected – the homeowner and the neighbouring properties over the following weeks. We were able to deliver food support as well as emotional support through our Counselling Service.

Our Wolseley Hub-based Compassionate Café continues to thrive, attracting new members through referrals from the Healthy Futures Team and local GPs. We now have approximately 25 regular attendees. Sessions are facilitated by our Wellbeing Hub Advisor, Marie, with regular guest organisations like Plymouth Energy Community and Southwest Water sharing valuable information and advice.
Group members are taking the initiative to organise their own social activities outside of the Café, such as monthly meals, outings to Dartmoor Prison and the Devonport Heritage Museum, and even a five-day holiday to Eastbourne!
In the Summer we were involved in a ‘Community Values’ project with College Road School. Our Compassionate Café attendees gave their ideas as to what community values were important to them, these were then made into graphics and displayed at the school. We supported the ‘Poppy Campaign’ where members of our Compassionate Café made poppies during their support sessions for the display outside of the Council House.

Garden 71

In early 2024, we created Community Roots, a vibrant gardening group. Our dedicated team of local volunteers meets weekly at the Patchwork, where they’ve been cultivating a thriving garden. The team have successfully grown a variety of vegetables, and made the most of the existing fruit trees, harvesting apples and blackberries. To share the bounty, members have brought delicious treats like blackberry muffins and apple crumble to the weekly
gatherings. Sustainability is at the heart of our group. We've introduced composting bins to reduce waste and enrich our soil. Any surplus produce is generously donated to local groups and food banks, ensuring that our efforts benefit the entire community.
